History of the Squares
In the centre core of Sibiu one can feel the organizational role of the first two fortified precincts which determined a great deal the ensemble geometry of the three squares – Huet Square, Small Square and Large Square.
The Huet Square was formed on the pathway of the first fortified precincts of Sibiu at the time when the fortification lost its practical role, starting with the second half of the 14th century, at the same time with the complete reinforcement of the “Upper Town”.
The Small Square is located on the territory within the inside of the second fortification belt of the city. In the Western side, the square was limited by a line of houses that concomitantly form the Easter side of Huet Square. At the North-West, where it used to be a guard tower of the 2nd precincts, below which, though a tunnel, people were accessing the citadel from the “Lower Town”, the first cast iron bridge of our country is currently put into place.
The Large Square was practically the vital centre of Sibiu. Its pathway was designed in the middle of the 14th century, once the division into lots of the “Upper Town” was finalized. On two of its sides (South and East) the old buildings are preserved, dating, as layout and original core, since the 15th century.
The Patrician houses were also grouped in these squares or nearby, thus adding even more consistency to this central core.
